FAQ
-
The vestibular system is a very small yet mighty system within your inner ear. It is 1 of 3 systems we use for balance and helps tell us where we are in space. Therefore, any pathology to the inner ear such as swelling, compression on the vestibulocochlear nerve, or dislodged otoconia or “crystals” within the inner ear canals can cause abnormal symptoms such as vertigo, nausea, disequilibrium, or imbalance.
-
Yes! The Epley maneuver is the most common maneuver performed for posterior canal BPPV. However, the Epley is specific to certain canals and does not cure ALL vertigo. We perform several other different maneuvers - all dependent on which canal is affected and what your eyes tell us!
-
When crystals become dislodged, they will be free-floating in 1 of our 3 semi-circular canals. Each canal is associated with specific eye muscles, so your eye will uncontrollably be pulled into a specific direction based on where the crystals are located. We utilize infrared goggles in our clinic that allow us to assess eye movements for “nystagmus” in order to more accurately determine where the crystals are and therefore which canal needs to be treated.
-
No, vestibular rehab is needed for many symptoms outside of just “dizziness” that most people do not recognize as an issue. Other descriptions that vestibular rehab can address include: “brain fog”; “haziness”; “rocking or swaying”; feeling “floaty”; feeling “detached” from one’s self (depersonalization); feeling pulled to 1 side; motion sickness as a passenger or backseat rider; sensitivity to viewing increased visual stimuli such as patterned carpets, moving fan, or moving tree limbs in the wind; increased eye fatigue or eye blurriness; or just simply feeling “off” or “not normal”
-
Infrared goggles - these are CRUCIAL in assessing your eye movements and being able to differentiate if your dizziness is coming from the vestibular system (a peripheral issue) vs. something potentially more sinister like a stroke or other neurological disorder (a central issue). Also, the goggles allow us to more accurately and confidently ensure if otoconia or “crystals” are dislodged and where they are located so that the CORRECT canal and the CORRECT ear can be treated!
RightEye - this high-tech software links up to your pupils in order to provide objective data on how well your eyes are tracking moving targets, jumping from target to target, and fixating on a specific target. This detailed report helps us know how we can better train your eyes because the eyes, the inner ear, and the brain all have to be on the same page and communicate effectively individually and together for you to feel your best!
-
Although we do not file to insurance companies, we can provide you with a “superbill” that has all the necessary information for you to file to your specific insurance independently.
-
Unfortunately, you cannot use a superbill if you are planning to file to Medicare or Medicaid. You are able to still come to us out of pocket, but if we see that you would benefit from a more traditional insurance model, we will help you find a better fit!
-
Kat and Adi have both taken insurance in the past and found that with reimbursement rates being so low, most companies are forced to see several patients an hour and insurance dictates what treatment should be provided. We want to provide higher quality 1:1 care and treat the way that is best for you (without insurance getting in the way)
-
Yes, we most certainly do!
-
Yes, we are highly qualified and certified in dry needling. Because most of our vestibular patients also have neck-related pain, tension, or stiffness, we often incorporate dry needling of the neck into our plan of care. This will help improve neck ROM, decrease muscle tension, decrease headaches, and allow us to better fire the vestibular system!
*Disclaimer: This is not something we have to do by any means for those that are more anxious or fearful of needles - this is just 1 of many tools in our toolbox that can be a great adjunct in treatment
